Hi friends, I have missed y’all! If you want to know, here is what’s been happening and how I nearly died.
On friday 4/11 I had an achy tooth. I am pretty sure an old filling fell out. On monday 4/14 I called the dentist and took the first available appointment, which was for wednesday 4/16. The following morning I woke up with my face swelling and in pain, and by the next day at my appointment could barely get my mouth open. The dentist wrote me some prescriptions and a referal to an oral surgeon for my wisdom teeth. (you might already know know this, but for anyone who didn’t know)
I set up a consult at the oral surgen for 4/30. On friday 4/18, I called the dentist to ask if there is anything else that can be done for the swelling, which had gotten worse, not better. They said, well, it can take days for the swelling to go down so don’t worry, you can just double your penicillin dose for today or you can call your doctor and ask if you can get a penicillin shot. So I doubled my dose for that day. Saturday 4/19, my face was more swollen still, I could barely talk and was starting to have real trouble swallowing. On the phone with my dad, he told me I needed to go to the emergency room and i could get husband to take me, or my dad would drive out and take me himself. Well, now I can’t have my 68 year old dad drive halfway across the USA to drive me to see doctor, so I went. The emergency room doc looked at me and said, “this should seen to by an oral surgeon already.” He wrote me another antibiotic, and called the oral surgeon himself, and the oral surgeon agreed to see me first thing monday 4/21, which, I do not exaggerate, is why I am still alive today.
The morning of 4/21 I really thought I was dying, I could no longer swallow except the tiniest sips of water and even that was horribly difficult. The oral surgeon removed 3 wisdom teeth, 2 of which were badly infected, then he admitted me to the hospital because he thought there was a 3rd abscess that he was not able to drain in his office. I had surgery again at the hospital 4/22 to drain the final abscess, which was the size of a golf ball and had swollen into my throat and was mostly blocking it. He told me after that I would not have been able to breathe for much longer, and it was a good thing I had gone to the emergency room.
I STILL have a tooth that I think needs a filling replaced, so the tooth that started this whole mess is still there and unchanged, but at least it no longer hurts, as soon as all the swelling is gone I will go back to a dentist (maybe a DIFFERENT dentist..?) and get it fixed.
So, in a matter of a few days, my tooth went from, “oh that kind of hurts, I should get it looked at,” to a serious, life-threatening condition, so DON’T IGNORE YOUR TEETH! It can seriously kill a person, even a healthy person.
